The first annual Swish 2 Success Slaughter Elite camp was a huge success. We had over 150 youths in attendance, ages 6-18, from Shelbyville and surrounding areas. This was a free, one-day basketball camp offered to the kids with the help of AJ Slaughter. Slaughter is a Shelbyville resident who currently is in his 9th year playing professional basketball in Europe. Coaches that attended and helped run the camp were also professional athletes from the local Louisville and Shelbyville areas. During the camp, kids were instructed on the fundamentals of basketball, participated in skills development stations, and had a chance to hear from all the coaches about their basketball journey.

With a career excelling from high school to collegiate and professionally, former Shelby County High School basketball player A.J. Slaughter is helping grow the sport at the youth levels. The former Rocket star recently finished up the first annual A.J. Slaughter-taught basketball camp for youth basketball players, which ended in June and was hosted at Collins High School.
““[The basketball camp] is something I’ve been wanting to do to help give back to the community,” Slaughter said. “I want to give back to these kids. There’s not a lot of people that come out of Shelby County and play anywhere after high school. I’ve been fortunate enough to take the game of basketball, make a profession out of it and play the game overseas and see different parts of the world. I just wanted to give back to these kids and let them know there are opportunities out there even if you don’t make the NBA.”
The camp was a success with a large number of attendees, and Slaughter hopes the event can
become a yearly occurrence. “This was the first year running the camp,” he said. “We had over 100 kids, and it really went well. We’re planning on making it an annual event.” To read the full article, CLICK HERE.
