Swish 2 Success 3rd Annual Basketball Camp

1/27

Despite the limitations imposed by COVID, the return of the annual Swish 2 Success  Camp brought out 100 youth from Shelbyville and surrounding areas. Even though we were not able to host as many kids as we do under normal circumstances, we wanted to have this event for the youth especially with all the changes they faced this year. AJ Slaughter hosted this free one-day event with the help of other professional athletes and former college basketball players serving as coaches.  To safely have this event, the camp was broken into two sessions, which proved more eventful than imagined.  Campers participated in skills development, practiced the fundamentals of basketball, performed in a friendly dance battle with each other, and heeded advice from the coaches on how basketball has impacted their lives.

Swish 2 Success basketball camp still on

Swish 2 Success – a non-profit organization run by Anna Persaud and former Shelby County basketball star AJ Slaughter – will be holding its annual free basketball camp on July 25 at the Clear Creek Park Family Activity Center. Sign-ups for the camp close on July 21.

This year’s camp will be broken up into two sessions – one for children ages six to 10 running from 9 a.m. to noon and one for ages 11-16 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Children attending the camp will receive a free T-shirt and a box lunch to take home.

This is the organization’s third year hosting the camp, but concerns over COVID-19 caused a change in location, format, and uncertainty early in the year if the camp would even happen.

“We’ve had to restructure everything,” Persaud said. “In February, I’d secured the location and the sponsorships but that all fell through. I was thinking we were going to have to cancel the camp. I did a lot of research and I started thinking we could make it happen and then (Gov. Andy) Beshear released his guidelines and I knew we could do it.”

In the first two years, the camp was an all-day event with all 150 campers together doing drills and concluding with scrimmage games. This year, the sessions will be capped at 50 children each, broken up into groups of 10.

For Slaughter – who currently plays for Real Betis in Spain’s top league – says it’s important for him to give back to the community he’s from. To read the full article, CLICK HERE

We are so excited to host our 1st Annual Back 2 School Bookbag Drive! With COVID restrictions in place, we opted to distribute book bags filled with supplies to the Resource Officers at each school to hand out at device rollout and distribute bookbags at Stargazer Plaza on Main Street. With the generous contributions from our sponsors, we were able to purchase and fill 570 bookbags for our youth to have a successful school year! We were even able to donate supplies to schools for their supply closets! This event was such a huge success and we look forward to making this an annual event in the upcoming years with a community-wide Back 2 School Bash!
